SistersCAN

Our Social Mentoring initiative promotes breaking new grounds, bridging the gap, tearing down walls and stereotypes, forging networks and causing generational paradigm shifts. A Canadian sister is paired with a newcomer woman to Canada. Along with adjusting to the culture shock of living in Canada, most newcomers are previously marginalized women who have left their countries for the first time. SistersCAN is here to make the journey a little less frightening for the newcomer women and to help them forge a sense of belonging.

The experience generates learning on many levels. The environment provides the opportunity to present cross-cultural communication and to nurture its development, immersion for language skills development, self confidence, and self esteem building and break social isolation. The participants emerge more knowledgeable, more sensitive toward others, and more confident in her achievements and abilities.
